Astronomical Neolithic wonders (1-day trips with an archaeoastronomer)

The lower Danube was home to some of the earliest and most advanced Neolithic cultures in Europe. There is a lot to explore but we have handpicked the main jewels. As a result we have several 1-day options from which you can choose.

The start point of your adventure is the city of Timisoara, an easily accessible place by air (several daily low-cost flights from many European countries) or by car (from central Europe or the Balkans).

The first choice is to visit the Neolithic sanctuary from Parta, Romania, a 6,000-year-old temple dedicated to the fertility and fecundity cult exhibiting several solar and stellar alignments as well as astronomical symbolism. Marc has researched this sanctuary extensively and will tell you all about it. We will visit the place where the sanctuary was discovered where traces of pottery can still be seen (collection of it is strictly prohibited), and the museum that hosts it (a new museum is under construction and the old one – now closed to the public – can be visited with prior approval). Marc will also show you a 3D reconstruction of it. Prices range from 15 EUR to 60 EUR per person depending on the group size (up to 6 persons) and transportation mode (bus/private car) and include transportation and the professional tour guide. Contact us for details on upcoming trips there!

The second choice is to go all the way to Croatia and visit the Vucedol calendar vase. Croatia is closer to Timisoara than Bucharest, the capital of Romania. The calendar shows, based on some research, evidence of a stellar calendar dating from the copper age (Eneolithic). Others believe it to represent atmospheric solar phenomena. Marc will explain these to you on the way there. Prices range from 30 EUR to 468 EUR per person depending on the group size (up to 6 persons) and transportation mode (bus/private car) and include transportation and the professional tour guide.
