100 reasons to travel in search of archaeo astro sites

Back in 2012 when we were starting our research on the archaeoastronomical landscape around the world for our upcoming book, we began building this Google Map of every site we could find in the research articles we studied. Currently, we have 108 places that can be visited ranging from rock art and megaliths to artifacts and museums. Some of these sites are incredible and less known to the public, some are not even advertised on tourism pages. During our trips we usually traveled alone, making great friends along the way. We usually do not take people to places we have not visited before. This has led to some amazing tours and archaeo astro experiences (all organized by us), The list does not include the numerous Roman towns and military castra known to be astronomically aligned.

Since then we have visited about half of the megalithic sites

 53%

and about a third of the artifacts listed on the map.

 29%

Our visits have taken us to 5 continents and 15 countries.

What do these sites align with?

Interestingly most alignments are solar (over half of them) with some lunar (mostly in the British Isles – on this map only one site is marked but many individual sites are believed to be scattered across the UK), and few planetary (Venus) and stellar (Pleiades and other stars). Roughly a third are cardinal (including any of the four cardinal directions and the so-called equinoctial alignments).

The general orientation of the megalithic sites that are listed in the Google map. Caution should be taken as some sites exhibit multiple alignments and can be included in several categories.

We were fortunate to witness the alignment in the case of 10 sites:

Our thirst for alignments is still very much unsatisfied and we are already planning to witness at least several others including:

  • “La cabana” Dolmen, Spain (winter solstice, 2023)
  • Bryn Celli Ddu, UK or Lepenski Vir, Serbia (summer solstice, 2024)

We will be posting soon images of the alignments we have witnessed here and on our Youtube channel, including live streams that we can experience together. In some cases, we will be organizing tours, so be sure to follow us and register for updates.
