Lepenski Vir is the place where Mesolithic people (8000 years ago) chose to build their village such that it aligns with the solstice sunrise over the Trescovăț mountain on the other side of the Danube. The area is home to some of the most advanced cultures in the Balkans and Europe, the Starčevo-Criș and Vinča cultures. In the museum, we will see the mysterious fish-people figurines. Our tour will also include a visit to the Museum of Mountain Banat to see some amazing and mysterious artifacts from those cultures on display there, as well as a visit to the only prehistoric rock art cave in Banat. On our way, we will visit the place where Hercules placed its famous columns (yes, the original legends place them on Istros/Danube, not in Spain which was probably unknown to the ancient Greeks).

Depending on your arrival/departure time, we will visit the modern Stonehenge monument in Timișoara as well.

Our tour starts and ends in Timișoara.

Our journey starts in Timișoara, the city of roses and the 2023 European Capital of Culture.

If you arrive early we will have a tour of the city including the Stonehenge monument.

From Timișoara we head towards Orșova on the shores of the Danube (Istros or Okeanos) river where legends say Hercules built its pillars on the island of Ada Kale now submerged under waters due to the construction of the Iron Gates I dam.

In Orșova we will take a boat trip to visit the Tabula Traiana which marks the road Roman emperor Trajan built for its conquest of Dacia. We will also have lunch there.

We continue to Drobeta and cross the Iron Dam into Serbia where we spend the night.  On arrival we will check-in in a 3* hotel or guesthouse and enjoy the summer evening there.

We will take a light breakfast (or take boxes to eat after sunrise) and head to Lepenski Vir, the place of the earliest known solar alignment in Europe and home to a highly advanced Mesolithic culture older than anything in the Western megalithic world.

Note: as we lack the power of the ancient deities to control the weather, in case of cloudy skies we will see a simulation of the sunrise and pictures from past events.

After witnessing the sunrise we will visit the museum.

We depart for Moldova Nouă in Romania crossing the Danube by ferry at 9:15 am. On the Romanian side, we will visit a less-known and hidden to tourists ancient site depicting wonderful rock art dating back several thousands of years. The short hike uphill is on rocky terrain and those unable to do it can watch the visit live stream on their phones.

We will eat lunch in a traditional guesthouse.

Optionally (if you still have the energy) we can witness the once in the 19-year event, the lunastice moonrise from the Neolithic Vatin Circles in Serbia before heading to Timișoara where our trip ends.

Timisoara has an international airport which operates several daily flights from around Western Europe (UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium). Many are low cost flights.

From Austria and Hungary or the Balkans you can get there by car or bus.

Unfortunately we do not cover that but there a a lot of very good places around the central area that you can find on other sites such as Booking.com

We usually depart from near the city center but the actual place and time will be communicated 24 hours before the departure time.

While temperatures in summer can reach over 30 degrees Celsius, weather can be windy or rainy so bring a raincoat or windbreaker. Bring sunscreen and something to cover your head. 2L of water should suffice to have with you in the car/van.

In addition, for the solstice sunrise bring several layers of clothes as it can get chilly in the morning.

For the cave visit, make sure you have strong hiking boots that cover your ankles and long pants preferable jeans. Our hike involves going uphill for about 30 minutes on rocky terrain (there is no footpath) and vipers are known to be present in the area. Use of hiking poles / solid sticks is highly advised. The guide will lead the way and make sure you are out of danger but ultimately it is your responsibility to stay safe. Do not rest or put your hands under rocks or in bushes without first checking there is no snake there!
