After crossing several European capitals, the Danube enters Romania at Bazias and carves its way through the Danube Gorges and the Iron Gates, marking the border between Serbia and Romania. In this area, prehistoric inhabitants<\/strong> settled on their way to what is now Western Europe and created amazing cultures such as the Lepenski Vir and Vin\u010da<\/strong>. We propose several tours to the area depending on your interest and time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The start point of your adventure is the city of Timisoara, an easily accessible place by air (several daily low-cost flights from many European countries) or by car (from central Europe or the Balkans).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our first option<\/span><\/strong> is a 2-day tour<\/strong> to visit one of the few accessible caves with rock art<\/strong> on the territory of Romania, followed by a visit to the amazing Lepenski Vir museum in Serbia <\/strong>named after the mesolithic culture that lived in the area more than 8,000 years ago. The trip requires a medium hike uphill on rocky terrain to visit the cave. It contains lots of ochre paintings dating from the paleolithic to the 10th century CE. At Lepenski, Marc will tell you about recent studies demonstrating a solstice alignment with the nearby mountains. It is probably the first evidence of intentional alignment in Europe. The second option<\/strong><\/span> is also a 2-day tour but in this one, we skip the rock art at Coronini and instead go straight for Lepenski Vir <\/strong>followed by a visit to the Magura Cave in Bulgaria<\/strong> to see the amazing bronze age cave paintings, some believed to represent an ancient calendar.
